Leighton Meester: ‘My Friends Think I’m a Weird Hippy Girl’
Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester was swept away by the magic of France last summer when she filmed her new movie Monte Carlo, opposite Selena Gomez and Katie Cassidy.
“It was the most amazing time of my life. I was with the most wonderful people. We filmed in Budapest, Paris, and Monte Carlo. It wasn’t too shabby!” the 25-year-old actress told Parade.com.
Not surprisingly, filming a movie in France turned out to be more of a vacation than work.
“Off camera, we got to go to the beach, the most amazing restaurants, and shopping. It was like a vacation. It was the most amazing location. We were staying in the hotel where we shot the film, so it was really fancy.”
Not only did the actress take in the sights while she was abroad, she also developed a close friendship with co-star Selena Gomez.
“She’s extremely mature and totally got along with all of us. She was saying that she was intimidated because we were older, but she is so mature for her age. If anything, she taught me a lot and I learned a lot from her. She’s incredibly talented. The three of us girls were in our own little pack and we had our inside jokes and were like ‘No boys allowed!’”
This summer, Leighton plans to focus on her biggest love: music.
“I’m in the phase of recording and performing with the band. We’ve had gigs out in L.A. It’s the most fun part of my life. It’s so exciting and it makes me feel so alive. I want to release an album very soon — hopefully before the end of the year. In the meantime, I want people to get a glimpse of what I’m doing. I love live music and I love to see people’s faces when I’m performing.”
Will she take her vocal talents to her Monte Carlo co-star, Cory Monteith’s hit show, Glee?
“Honestly, before I started working on the movie last summer, I hadn’t even heard of Glee. I’m so out of the loop. But working with Cory was so fun. He’s such a joy and really hilarious, so working with him on anything would be really fun.”
Despite the fame around her, the native Texan has managed to stay true to her down-to-earth roots.
“I do so much work that I don’t have a lot of time for my life! When I do get free time, I spend a lot of it at home with my family and my close friends and I think that’s what keeps me happy, healthy, grounded, and totally in check.
It also doesn’t hurt that her friends aren’t impressed with her Hollywood status.
“None of my friends think I’m very cool, so that’s good. I don’t even think about fame at all. My girlfriends always say, ‘I think it’s so weird everyone thinks you’re this star, and I think you’re just this weird hippy girl that I’ve known for years!’”

Ed Westwick: Television's Most-Loved 'Bad Boy
On the small screen, Ed Westwick is the “bad boy” in the hit US teen drama Gossip Girl which is based on the popular book series about privileged teenagers who attend an elite private school in New York City. Westwick’s character Chuck Bass is described as “an overly confident and sexy bad boy” who plays around with women.
In real life, Westwick is the opposite of his screen alter-ego. At a suite in the Manila Peninsula where the following Conversation was conducted, Westwick was “confident and sexy,” all right, but he was hardly a “bad boy.” The pre-interview reminder was not to ask him certain questions (such as if he’s “single and available;” according to a report, he dated Gossip Girl co-star Jessica Szohr from late 2008 and split from her in May last year, saying, “Girlfriends are too much of a headache”) but Westwick turned out to be “game,” answering all the other questions with a smile and a sparkle in his light-blue eyes that stayed focused on you. He was Mr. Nice all throughout, all the way, and he even agreed to pose for a souvenir photo with the interviewer.
Turning 24 on June 27, Westwick was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England, and had an early training at the National Youth Theater in London where he used to live. He has since uprooted himself and moved to New York where Gossip Girl is shot. He began his career in British television before going to Hollywood.
Although he has been in other shows (Californication, as a bully and surrogate father figure to his devoted younger brother, etc.) and a few movies (100 Feet, Chalet Girl, etc.), it’s Gossip Girl with which he has been identified. Last March, he began shooting J. Edgar, a biographical film directed by Clint Eastwood in which Westwick plays Agent Smith (Hoover’s biographer), with Leonardo DiCaprio among his co-stars.
During this Conversation, Westwick looked dapper in his Penshoppe get-up. Yes, it was Penshoppe that brought Westwick here as its 25th-anniversary endorser. The deal was closed by Joyce Ramirez of PR Asia Worldwide. Westwick arrived last Tuesday night (May 31) and left Thursday night (June 2). It was a hectic but fruitful 48 hours for Westwick in the Philippines mainly to shoot for Penshoppe with Australian fashion photographer Darren Tieste.
“Westwick perfectly embodies Penshoppe,” said Alex Mendoza, Penshoppe brand director.
The visit was much too short.
“I hope to come back,” said Westwick, “soon!”
How did you feel waking up halfway around the world from your home (New York)?
“It was a long trip but I felt great looking out of the window of my hotel room and saw the beautiful sunshine. I also saw green trees. The whole city looked great on my first morning here. Fantastic!”
How was your shoot for Penshoppe?
“Just as great! So far, so good. Everybody from Penshoppe and the Peninsula Hotel took good care of me. We started working at about 11 a.m. (on Wednesday) and finished at around 4 p.m. We shot at the swimming pool, at the bar and at other parts of the hotel. I was very happy with the result. I’d love to work with the same team again.”
What was your first reaction when the offer came to you as Penshoppe endorser?
“Well, I was excited because the brand comes from an area of the world where the fashion is something I don’t know much about. So, I’m getting to know the Penshoppe brand which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. It’s a great thing to come down here and get to know Philippine fashion and everybody involved in the project.”
How would you compare Philippine fashion to those in other parts of the world that you’ve visited?
“What’s interesting is that what they’re doing at Penshoppe is something new and I like it, especially the shirts.”
You look great in the Penshoppe that you’re wearing now.
“Thank you very much. I really, really like the jacket I’m wearing now.”
It’s your first time to wear a Philippine-made product, isn’t it?
“Yeah. Absolutely!”
You look very comfortable in it.
“I feel very, very comfortable. I look good on it, don’t I?”
Of course, you’re wearing Penshoppe on Gossip Girl.
“Definitely! That’s why I need more outfits so I need to come back.”
Speaking of Gossip Girl, what do you think makes the series so popular around the world?
“Oh, an interesting question! You can look at it from many angles. You know, I think the storylines are entertaining in every aspect, the role-acting is witty, the characters are well-developed and we shoot in the most attractive part of the world that is New York City. You know, all of these things together really make it quite accessible to everyone around the world. It’s not just about these wealthy people…It’s about families, it’s about love, it’s about relationships. The series revolves around subjects that anyone in any part of the world can easily identify with. That makes a great piece of television.”
You are probably the most well-loved “bad guy” around the world. How do you feel about it?
“Ahhhhh, pretty good! I feel good about the impact. I have a great time playing my character and I really enjoy it, so it’s good to know that people like your work, you know.”
Do you by any chance see even a bit of yourself in Chuck Bass?
“Hmmmm, I’m a red-blooded male.” (Laughs!) “Chuck Bass and I are completely different from each other. I find him a very interesting character to play and explore. You know, just being part of the show is very exciting.”
What do you find exciting about playing Chuck Bass?
“Well, you know, what can I not find exciting about Chuck Bass? He’s dressed in extravagant clothes, has this great sense of fashion, drives around in a limousine and gets to chase a lot of women around. So it’s a great thing being Chuck Bass. What a life!”
Of course, in real life it happens that women are chasing you around. How do you deal with it?
“Hahahaha! Oh, you take it in stride; you have to. It’s been very interesting. You know, the world is full of love and getting all this attention is a great experience.”
Have you learned how to get used to all the fuss about you?
“I don’t think you can ever learned how to be used to it. It’s just something you have to accept as part of your work. Wherever I am, whether in Australia, in the Philippines or in England, I’m always welcomed nicely and it’s a good thing.”
How has Gossip Girl changed your life?
“Radically, indeed! People everywhere know who you are and suddenly it’s a very different existence. I used to live in England and now I live in New York, and it’s adapting to a different culture and getting to know an entirely different kind of people.”
You mentioned in an earlier interview that it’s possible for Gossip Girl to shoot in Asia.
“I say, ‘Why not?’ There are so many fantastic locations all over Asia, it’s such a picturesque region. There are so many beautiful beaches in the Philippines.”
How are you like away from work? How do you pamper yourself?
“I’m a big soccer fan. I’m a big Chelsea fan. I’m sad that my favorite team didn’t win in the recent games. In New York, I have fun time enjoying a wide selection of wonderful food, and there are great movies and great plays.”
By the way, how do you maintain such a beautiful body?
“I play football. I enjoy working out in the gym almost every day.”
And your diet?
“Fresh fish and fruits all the time. And no alcohol.”
Have you tried any Filipino food?
“Not really. I was at a restaurant downstairs last night and I had a really nice chicken. But there’s still time. Maybe tonight. Why not?”
What’s the good thing about being Ed Westwick?
“Well, I’m a very lucky boy. I get to do a job that I really enjoy and I get to travel to fantastic places around the world, you know.”
What’s the best thing that you will remember about the Philippines?
“I haven’t gone too much, so I would say the beautiful sunrise.”
And what’s the bad thing about being Ed Westwick, if any?
“The bad thing?” (Thinks awhile) “The jetlag!” (And then laughs)
What did you do during the long flight to Manila?
“I slept a lot. I slept pretty much, man! And I watched a couple of films.”
Describe yourself in three words.
“Relaxed. Measured. English.”

Manila gets Chuck-Ed
Källa
You don’t always get frisked before an interview. You don’t always get asked to surrender your phone either.
Then again, you don’t always get to interview Ed Westwick
The British actor, who plays the scheming but undeniably sexy Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl, was in Manila this past week, shooting his campaign for clothing brand Penshoppe.
Penshoppe’s Brand Director Alex Mendoza said, “We were looking for a fresh international face to headline the new and revitalized Penshoppe.”
Gossip Girl fans in Manila clearly approve of the choice. Alex said, “We’re shocked because we released a behind the scenes photo last night of one of our campaign shots and we got 30,000 hits in two hours. Our Twitter followers tripled.”
The campaign hasn’t even been launched but it already seems to be working. As early as now, Ed’s fans have been flooding Penshoppe’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, promising to buy any products he endorses.
“It’s happening so fast, it’s so surreal. It’s a whirlwind for all of us,” says Alex. “Ed has lived up to our expectations and beyond. He is such a natural in front of the camera. The clothes look like they were made for him. Perfect.”
Hours before the private party Penshoppe hosted for Ed at The Peninsula Manila’s Salon De Ning last Thursday, Super sat down with the actor in his presidential suite. Wearing a jacket from Penshoppe’s Trailblazer Mid-Year 2011 Collection, Ed looked fresh and showed no signs of jet lag. Throughout the interview, he was charming and comfortable, delightfully British and funny.
Ed had spent the previous day shooting for Penshoppe’s new campaign and he was excited about it. “We had a really successful shoot yesterday. Everyone was really pleased. Good stuff.”
Alex said, “We’re just hoping that the campaign will make more and more people stop and take notice of Penshoppe—those people who may not have been paying attention the past few years, even people abroad.”
If anyone can do it, the guy who plays Chuck Bass can.
How has your trip here been so far? What has been your favorite experience?
Trip’s been great. It’s very hot here, very humid. But I’ve been in the hotel. Yesterday had been a busy day but this morning I was able to get out. We took a boat out around Manila Bay and we got to see the beautiful city skyline. It’s been a little bit of work and a little bit of fun, so perfect combination.
What made you say yes to Penshoppe?
It’s a strong brand that have a great ambition. They’re celebrating their 25th year this year.
They had a nice vision for what they wanted to do with their clothes. They wanted to move it forward and bring a higher level of fashion to it. I’m somebody who’s been very accustomed to that idea especially with Gossip Girl and especially with my own interest in fashion. I kinda felt that the idea fit together. It’s the first time I’ve really been here. It’s a part of the world that I wanted to explore, it’s a culture that I wanted to explore, also to see how fashionable it was here. Everything came together.
You had the shoot for Penshoppe yesterday. Which of the pieces you wore was your favorite?
I wore this bluey kind of green turquoise shirt, this gray cardigan type thing and there was a gray blazer, some cool skinny jeans and some blue desert boots that were really cool. That was my favorite one. And also this jacket. I really like this jacket. It’s really smart.
Is there anything you wouldn’t wear?
Cut-off jean shorts. I don’t really wear them anymore. I wore them once or twice—it wasn’t a look for me. It’s fine, it’s fine. It’s just something that I don’t wear now. It’s kind of interesting but I don’t wear bow ties because Chuck Bass wears bow ties. It’s kind of unfortunate because I like bow ties and if you’re going to a wedding or you’re going to somewhere fancy, it’s a nice thing. But I get to wear bow ties every day.
Will it be possible to see you wearing Penshoppe in Gossip Girl?
Absolutely. We’ll see. It’s never my decision to decide what to wear on Gossip Girl but maybe if I had some influence, we’ll see what happens.
How do you feel about Kaylee DeFer joining the show and Taylor Momsen and Jessica Szohr leaving?
Kaylee’s been a great addition. Her character’s been interesting and she’s a lot of fun. I know Taylor’s gone off to do stuff with her band so I wish her the best. And Jessica’s gone off to do other stuff as well, I think. So I wish them and everybody the best and I’m looking forward to this new season.
Do you see yourself in Chuck Bass? What do you love about him?
I don’t really see myself which is a good thing because he’s a bit of a dastardly individual. But what I admire about the character, from an acting point of view anyway, is that he’s very, in some ways, four dimensional. He has such mood swings, if you like. He can be very dark, he can be very soulless and heartless and horrible to be around. He can be so tortured in himself. But he can be really loving—but obsessional sometimes. That’s what I admire, from an acting point of view.
Do people confuse you with Chuck Bass?
No, I wouldn’t say confuse me with. I don’t think it’s ever like that. They get surprised when they hear me speak with my English accent but no, not really. I think people understand that it’s just a character, it’s not real.
If you had the power to dictate what would happen to Chuck and Blair, what would you do?
I think they belong together. I don’t know how we’re going to get them together but I think they’ve got to come together at some point and have little Chuck babies.
In bow ties.
Little Chuck babies in bow ties.
Can you talk about your future projects?
I finished shooting J. Edgar, it’s Clint Eastwood’s new film and it’s about J. Edgar Hoover who was the head of the FBI in the States. It’s his story. I’m in that and I’m gonna play a young FBI agent. That’s very exciting and we’re going to enjoy that when it comes out. And we’re doing Romeo Juliet and I’m playing Tybalt, Juliet’s fiery cousin. That’s gonna be another interesting character for me to play—obviously a classic story.
Before coming here did you have any idea how huge your fan base was? How does it feel to drive a whole country crazy?
(laughs) I don’t know, I didn’t know. I mean I know that Gossip Girl goes around the world and it’s an amazing thing to be part of but I never kind of expect anything, I don’t think you should. It’s an amazing welcoming and I just want to say thanks. Everyone’s been really really nice. Good stuff.
Cosmo intervjuv med Ed!
Ed Westwick plays a perfectly polished, devilishly handsome bad boy in the hit CW TV series Gossip Girl. Whether or not he has on his Chuck Bass hat, the British actor has an undeniably sexy sense of style, which makes him all the more irresistible to girls the world over...and even to fashion brands.
This is the reason Penshoppe asked the 23-year-old star to be their newest endorser, in line with their 25th anniversary campaign. The local fashion brand flew Ed from the Upper East Side to Manila on May 31 for a series of photo shoots, as Ed will be Penshoppe's poster boy for four seasons. In case you missed that, yes, Ed Westwick was here, on our shores, and just last night, June 2, he was in Makati for the press conference at the posh Salon de Ning in Manila Peninsula. Cosmo got the chance to see Ed in the flesh, and as our treat for you, we're publishing excerpts from the brief yet truly unforgettable interview we had with your fave actor. He regaled us with his sexy British accent and some of his lines from Gossip Girl, plus his sweet sense of humor and light, charming, and down-to-earth replies.
Is this your first time in the Philippines?
This is my first time in the Philippines. And I'd like to thank everyone—everyone's made me feel really welcome.
It's been a short trip, and a very hectic one at that. How have you coped with the schedule so far?
Well, I was feeling a little jetlagged before I came out here with all the bright lights and lots of people, but I'm now wide awake. It's been a very, very quick trip. But everything has gone really, really well. We've had a great time here, doing the shoot yesterday, it was fantastic. Everyone involved in it has been amazing. And today I actually went out on a boat around Manila Bay, took a look at the Manila skyline. You have a beautiful city here. You have a beautiful country, and beautiful, fantastic people.
We appreciate that you made the trip, it was about 16 hours, right?
Well, yeah, I got on a plane in New York, stopped over in Seoul, South Korea, and then… I'm going to do it all over again tonight.
Before you came here, what was your concept of the Philippines? And now that you're leaving, how has it changed?
Well, you know, flying on my way over, I was reading a little bit, and I was very surprised to hear that you have around 7,000 islands! And I now know, when somebody asks, to say "High tide or low tide?" But you know, that was amazing to me, the amount of islands there are. Obviously it's a region of the world that's very rich in culture. I didn't know too much, but now I've kind of just touched the surface, I feel. So I've got to try and make a trip back. I want to get out to some of the islands, which I hear is like paradise. So, it's a very rich, diverse place, and I'm excited to get back and spend a little bit more time.
We heard that you wanted to meet Manny Pacquiao?
You know, I think I might have said I wanted to fight Manny Pacuiao. (Ed laughs.) But no, of course I don't want to. Of course I don't want to…die. But yeah, I'm a huge fan of boxing and I'm a huge fan of Pacquiao. That's probably the strongest thing I knew about the Philippines before I got here.
Are you familiar with Charice (Pempengco)?
Oh yes, of course…I think I know her.
Have you met her?
I think I have actually. You know, with the country's huge population, there's a lot of talent here, a lot of culture, and obviously the Philippines has a lot to offer around the world…
You're leaving so soon, have you picked up any souvenir from the country?
Well, I have, but… I've forgotten the name of…There's someone who made me a bamboo chair… (Kenneth Cobonpue) Yes, I have one of these. So that's my souvenir. That's something I can take home.
Although you've only been here for a couple of days, how do you find Filipina women?
Well, I haven't found any yet. (Laughs.)
Does anything strike you as particularly special about Filipinas?
Well, you know, in general, everyone I've met has been fantastic, but… Filipina women do seem to have…quite an attractive look about them, I have to say, so…it's one of the reasons why I'm coming back.
Now, with regards to your role on Gossip Girl, what are the similarities and differences between Ed Westwick and Chuck Bass?
Well, we're both male… We both look alike, which is very strange, isn't it? (Laughs.) But you know, we're actually very different, I'm sad to say. You see, he's such an amazing character to play, and so much fun, and I had a great time working with all the people I work with on the show. But no, I live quite a different life, I'm afraid to say. I, uh… I don't ride in a limousine quite as often.
One thing you seem to have in common is your great sense of style, yes?
Well, yeah, like they say, it's nice to look nice. I think fashion is a very important part of our lives in this day and age. You know, it's self-expression, self-reflection... It's kind of like a knight going into battle: you get dressed wearing clothes you want to wear, and it makes you feel confident, makes you feel good. That's definitely the approach I kind of have, and definitely when working with my character Chuck Bass. He's somebody who's got a very unique sense of dress, a very strong sense of dress, and that makes it so much fun to play, for me. You know, I get to dress up in really fantastic clothes.
Whats the biggest influence Chuck Bass has had on you?
Um… How not to mistreat women. (Laughs.) You know, Chuck can be pretty awful at times…so I guess I've learned a few things as to what not to do.
How has it been like proving to people that you're more than just Chuck Bass, and what’s something about you that Chuck doesn’t or would never do?
Well, I think you can look at it in two ways—you can look at it professionally and you can look at it personally. Professionally, when you're part of a show that's so well known, and you're acting as a character like that—within that, you have a character that is a bit iconic, perhaps, a lot of people know the character, a lot of people admire the character and [are] entertained by him—you begin to directly associate with that character. But as a professional, I think its especially important to remember that it’s still a role... I think, professionally, it's important to look for other work that brings you to a different role, to a different character, and interact with different people…
And then personally, I know I'm very different from Chuck Bass. But one thing he'd never have on me is English charm. He's got that American charm, but he hasn't got the English charm, you know.
It's your birthday this month right? (Ed's note: Ed was born June 27, 1987.) How do you plan to celebrate?
Yes, it is, I'll be 24 this June. My plan is... I've got friends coming in from London to New York… Maybe I should fly back to Manila and throw a party here? We could have it here actually, fantastic room… (Audience goes wild.)
But well, I don't really know [what I'll be doing], I might be shooting Gossip Girl, so we'll see what happens.
Oh, now that you've mentioned it… What will happen on Gossip Girl?
Um, I don't know what's happening, I uh… (Ed laughs as the crowd reacts.) I'm not sure what's happening yet, but I know from the first episode, it's pretty good… I think the past four years—four seasons—have been amazing. I had the opportunity to explore many different parts of Chuck and different storylines. And I've got full faith in the writers, in whatever they want to do for the next season. So we'll just see what happens, but I'm sure it's going to be a great season.
You have a very sexy English accent. Do you ever slip when you're doing the American one?
Well, not really. Luckily I can keep it going when I have to.
Since Gossip Girl is set in New York and you also live there, it's such a part of the show. It's like what they said in Sex And The City—it's like the fifth lady. If we were going to hang out with you in New York, what would be our itinerary? Where would we go?
Well, first of all, I'd pick you up at the airport. (Women in the audience scream in approval, and he laughs.) And then, uh…if you're jet-lagged, I think you'd need to rest. And then, I don't know. There's so much you could do. Central Park is gorgeous this time of year, it's a good place to hang out, relax there for a bit. Then I'd take you around the city. There are so many great restaurants in New York, it really is an amazing city. Like what you said, in Sex and the City, it's like a fifth lady. I mean, there really is character in it…
[With Gossip Girl], it's not like shooting the show in L.A. for example, or in another city where you're trying to recreate that location. We're very, very privileged, and very lucky to be able to shoot [in New York]. So yeah, it's really special.
In between taping, how do you like to spend your extra time?
Well, you know, like I said, there are plenty of great restaurants in New York, you know, they've definitely got good food. I like to play a lot of soccer, football… like in the Philippines, you know, you really should be more into football. And [I like to] just hang out with friends. And, of course, being an actor, I'm a huge movie buff.
How excited are you for the new Romeo and Juliet?
I'm really excited. We've got a really, really great cast. It's keeping the traditional flow of Shakespeare's original language, but we've made it…more accessible to a contemporary generation. And yeah, it's going to be fantastic. Hailee Steinfeld is playing Juliet—very talented actress—and I get to play the wonderful role of Tybalt, the cousin of Juliet. It's going to be an amazing time. We're going to shoot in Verona…We'll get to bring probably the most famous story of all time back to life.
You're playing another bad boy in your upcoming movie, how do you tap into that wild side?
Well, you know, I think each character has to be treated individually. There's a different set of restrictions with Romeo and Juliet because it is period based, you know, it's the middle ages, it's different... I've got a little bit of time before I start work, so yeah, I'm still gonna figure that one out.
Would you call yourself a method actor (you know, like gain or lose weight for a role and such)?
No, I'm not practicing method acting right now. For somebody to give that much of himself to a role is a remarkable thing. And it's something that I don't think you can achieve overnight. I think it's a very methodical process, a very meticulous process. But now, at the moment, I adopt a different style. In the future it may be something I look into. When I go a little bit more…crazy.
Apart from acting, what are your other talents?
Well, I play a bit of the guitar. Recently I've been trying to learn how to play the spoons, though I'm not that good yet. Really, I'm good at football, there you go. And that's about it. I'm good at sleeping as well.
Can you sing?
(Smiles.) Not right now.
This is not a question, but we just wanted to hear you say your line "I don't need passports, I'm Chuck Bass."
(Ed takes on his American accent and Chuck Bass swagger.)
I don't need passports, I'm Chuck Bass.
Well that was fun! That was the easiest thing I had to do all night! Thank you for that!

You Know You Love Him: Ed Westwick Charms Manila
If you think Chuck Bass is a charmer on the hit American TV series Gossip Girl, wait ’til you meet the man behind the villain we all love to, well, love. Ed Westwick, also known as the hit show’s resident bad boy and now the new poster boy for Penshoppe, arrived in Manila on May 31 for the local clothing brand’s 25th anniversary campaign photo shoot.
Perhaps to evoke true Upper East Side fashion, the press-con-slash-chat-with-Chuck party was held at the swanky Salon de Ning on June 2 at the Peninsula Manila. The British actor and former frontman of indie punk rock band The Filthy Youth regaled members of the press with the same devilishly-sexy swagger his Gossip Girl character is known for, and an eargasmic English accent that the 23-year-old actor masks on the show.
Fresh from his Penshoppe shoot the day before, Westwick sat down with the media and shared his thoughts on his alter-ego Chuck Bass, his first-ever Manila visit, what he thinks about Filipino women, and more. Oh, and he gave us a sample of that signature Chuck Bass voice, too.
On his similarities and differences with his character on the hit show Gossip Girl, Chuck Bass:
“We’re both male. We both look alike, which is very strange, isn’t it? But no, we’re actually very different. He’s such an amazing character to play, so much fun, and I have a great time working with the all the people working in the show, but I live quite a different life I’m afraid to say. I don’t ride the limousine quite often.
But one thing he will never have on me is this English charm. He’s got that American charm, but he doesn’t have the English charm, you know.”
On his other talents:
“Well I play a bit of the guitar. Recently I’m trying to learn how to play the spoons though I’m not that good yet. Really, I’m good at football, there you go. And that’s about it. I’m good at sleeping as well.”
On his new film project Romeo and Juliet where plays Tybalt:
“Yeah [I'm] really excited. We got a really, really great script. It’s keeping the traditional flow of the Shakespeare traditional language but it’s more accessible to a contemporary generation. And yeah, it’s going to be fantastic. Hailee Steinfeld is playing Juliet—very talented actress—and I get to play the wonderful role of Tybalt, the cousin of Juliet. It’s going to be an amazing time. We’re going to shoot in Verona…We’ll get to bring probably the most famous story of all time back to life.
On Manila:
“This is my first time in the Philippines and I have to say [it's been] really good because everyone’s made me feel really, really welcome…I was feeling a little jetlagged until I came out here and there are lots of bright lights and lots of people so now I’m wide awake. It’s been a very, very good trip. Every thing’s gone really, really well. We had a great time during the shoot yesterday. That was fantastic. Everybody involved in Penshoppe has been amazing. And then today I went out on a boat around Manila Bay. I went to take a look at the Manila skyline. You have a beautiful city here, a beautiful country, and beautiful, fantastic people.”
On how he finds Filipino women:
“Well, I haven’t found any yet. In general, everbody I got to meet has been fantastic, but the Filipino women, they seem to have quite an attractive look I have to say. It’s one of the reasons why I’m coming back.”

Nej inspelningarna börjar inte för än i Juli vanligtvis. haha jaja mina åsikter är inte vad som är intressant så för att sluta mitt fina utlägg så får ni en intervjuv med Ed :P
During his barely 48 hours stay in the Philippines, the first ever country in Asia that he has visited, Ed Westwick took time out from his tight shoot schedule for Penshoppe (as its 25th-anniversary endorser) for a cruise around Manila Bay yesterday morning.
“I had a chance to see the sunrise and it was great!” the “bad boy” of the hit US teen drama Gossip Girl told Funfare Update in a one-on-one at a suite in the Manila Peninsula where he was billeted during his too brief sojourn. “The beautiful sight took my jetlag away. We had breakfast on the boat while watching Manila’s breathtaking skyline.”
Asked what he took for breakfast, Ed said, his light-blue eyes lighting up, “Poached eggs and wheat bread, and fruits.”
Ed, who’s turning 24 on June 27, expressed regrets that his stay in Manila was much too short. He flew in last Tuesday night and he was scheduled to fly back to New York last night to resume shooting for Gossip Girl in which he plays Chuck Bass, the “user” womanizer who is the exact opposite of the actor who was warm, friendly, accommodating and receptive even to mildly “personal” questions that Funfare Update was reminded beforehand not to ask him.
What’s the possibility of Gossip Girl shooting some episodes in Asia, specifically the Philippines?
“That would be great!” he said. “In fact, we’re considering that possibility. It would be nice to shoot here, in Tokyo and other parts of Asia.”
He’d be glad to be back “Soon,” he stressed perhaps not so much to work but just to visit and see more of the Philippines.
In closing, Ed said thank you to “all the nice people” who welcomed him at the airport on his arrival, even if some pieces of his luggage got entangled with the TV cameramen who scrambled over one another to shoot him from a good angle.
“I hope you’re all right now,” he smiled.
