The star is best known for his role in American television series Gossip Girl, in which he plays Chuck Bass. He knows there are often funny rumours circulating about him, but doesn’t let them affect him. They do get to his mother and father though, as they read every story printed about their son.

“It’s very bizarre. There are things written than you wish weren’t, things that aren’t anybody else’s business. At first it was weird, surreal, frustrating, but if people want to say sh*t they’re going to say sh*t,” he said. “My mum and dad scale the internet 24/7 so the stories bother them more. I speak to them three or four times a week but they’re always like, ‘I saw this picture of you, what’s going on?’ They’re funny.”

Ed largely remains unaffected by fame, although they are some things he watches out for. He sometimes worries about getting presents from fans, after one of his co-stars received an odd gift from an over-zealous admirer.

“It was a teddy bear with a secret camera sewn into it,” he told Company magazine. “Luckily our security guard had encountered the same thing with Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex and the City so he intercepted it. That’s scary sh*t though...”

Spotted: S getting out of a cab outside Columbia.  Ugh, boring.  Where’s the S we all know and <3 who goes to fabulous premieres and lavish openings?  D with E and their parents having a fancy dinner at Daniel.  Perhaps belated anniversary celebration?  Though no J in sight.  N at Best Buy picking up the new video game Limbo.  Gamer N makes me happy.  No spottings of B or C this week.  I’m sure B is recovering from her crazy bday party.  And as for C, I’m sure he’s recovering from just being his typical self.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, Ed Westwick is not a scumbag—he just plays one on TV. He’s probably not hurting for beer money, but he isn’t carrying around Chuck Bass coin. And he’s British. Essentially, Ed Westwick is not his Gossip Girl alter ego.

“I think there have been a couple of fans that were a little bit let down,” says Westwick, 23, of people’s reaction to meeting him and not hearing that distinct Chuck Bass voice. “I guess sometimes people are a little freaked out that I am not a meanie completely. I mean, I can be bad at times. I can have my mood swings.”

GOTHAM: The European mentality about sex on television is so different from America’s. Were you surprised by the uproar that Gossip Girl created when it first launched?
ED WESTWICK: I thought it was great! I remember the big OMFG campaign—there were all these billboards around with me and Leighton [Meester] kissing and sound bites from critics or parents associations that were disgusted at our show, and I found it quite hilarious really.

Is it weird reading every aspect of your life in tabloids?
It’s a very weird thing. I’m still a young guy so when things happen, I know that in some measure it’s going to be out there. It can be annoying at times, but it’s just something that comes with the territory. Now I’m at the stage where I’m brushing things off.

What’s the paparazzi situation like in the UK versus here?
EW: Here there are always two dudes lurking down in the Meatpacking District right outside the Gansevoort. You know the places that might phone someone to come snap you coming out, as opposed to in London, where I haven’t experienced that yet. The nuttiest ones were in Paris, when we were shooting there at the start of the season. I remember at one point the paparazzi picked this kid up and threw him.

What you wear on Gossip Girl is analyzed endlessly. How would you describe your personal style?
EW: Because we’re always dressed to the nines on the show, I’m a lot more relaxed in my day-to-day life. Obviously I’m not called on to wear a tux every day. I’m comfortable in my jeans and T-shirt. I’m big into my bracelets, my necklace, the Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses—cool little quirky things.

How does your style translate in your bachelor pad?
EW: There’s a place down on Houston Street that has loads of weird stuff, like this trunk from 1912 that the guy said used to belong to an aristocrat from Europe, which is one of my prized possessions.

Is there someone whose career you emulate?
EW: Well, you can look at the coolest people on earth, like Johnny Depp—the guy’s got an island and gets to spend four months in the Caribbean running around like a mad pirate, so things like that are pretty attractive to a young actor. And then being from England, I look at people like Daniel Craig, who gets to play an iconic British character, James Bond. Any English guy is a fan of being a spy for her majesty’s secret service.

Bond and not the villain? Really, you must do something bad.
EW: Oh my god, I don’t ever do anything really bad. I probably picked up my friend’s guitar and smashed it or something in a moment of rage. But I’ll get him a new one at some point, I promise.

Come on, this is New York—there’s so much you can get into.
EW: I’ve stolen road signs. I’ve got a cone in my apartment that I stole from the street the other night.

Where do you stay in London?
The Soho Hotel is a home away from home. Soho is a great area anyway. I used to stay in Camden, but it's got a bit young now.

What was the last play you saw in London?
Hamlet at the Donmar starring Jude Law.

What advice would you give a tourist coming to London?
Pack an umbrella and go to a Premiership
football game.

Which five London shops do you rely on?
Pret A Manger is great for tuna baguettes. I love Paul Smith, and Ozwald Boateng makes the best suits. I like picking up little trinkets at the random market stalls in Camden. And you can't beat a wander round Selfridges.

What's the best meal you've had in London?
At Lemonia in NW1. It's a quaint little Greek restaurant and the food is absolutely superb.

What's your earliest London memory?
When I was a kid I used to have to go and get my eyes tested. I'd have to take the day off school and my mum would take me to the Natural History Museum. I must have been about 100 times.

What would be on your tombstone?
'He knew how to get here.' It's a reference to
living fast and dying young. That would be my
rock'n'roll tombstone.

What are your guilty pleasures?
Peanut M&M's. I'm pretty guilt-free.

What are you most afraid of?
Death is kind of freaky.

What would you do as Mayor for the day?
I would shut down all the schools so the kids could have a day off.

What's your life philosophy?
If it's not fun, I'm not doing it.

What animal would you most like to be?
A lion because they're badass and king of the jungle. Although lions don't live in jungles… Did you ever think about that?

My Gibson 1957 Les Paul Junior guitar as it's
so much older than me. And probably my
Paul Smith overcoat.

Pretty much anything. I don't need an excuse to laugh. I make myself laugh a lot.

What makes you cry?
The commercials on television for saving rescue dogs. They're intense.

What are you up to at the moment?
I am about to go and shoot a scene for season 4 of the fantastic TV series Gossip Girl.

Which is your favourite London street for shopping?
Portobello Road, for the market.

What do you most like wearing?
Jeans and a leather jacket.

Where is the most romantic place in London?
It may be a cliché, but it's got to be Primrose Hill in the summertime.

Which is your favourite London pub?
I had a pretty hilarious night at The Abbey Tavern in Kentish Town. I also have a lot of fun in The World's End, in Camden. It's sketchy but fun.

Where were the last places you went on holiday?
I went to Montego Bay in Jamaica twice last year and stayed at The Ritz-Carlton. For New Year I went to Scotland with friends and family. I'm looking forward to having a break in Mauritius.

Have you ever stolen anything?
I was a shoplifter when I was ten years old
staying on a campsite in France and my friends persuaded me to steal a big bag of M&M's. I got caught by my dad, who was furious.

N Back on the Market

Thespians Imogen Poots and Felicity Jones are the latest to join the production which also includes Ed Westwick, Brooke Shields, Bill Nighy, Tamsin Egerton and Bill Bailey. Based on a book by the same name from author Sébastien Japrisot, Softley penned the screenplay and plans to begin helming early next year in London and France.

Plot Concept: The movie centers on two women — one rich, the other poor — who are trapped inside a beach house in a French resort when it is gutted by fire. Only one survives, burnt beyond recognition and in a state of total amnesia, leaving a slew of unanswered questions about her identity.

When Leighton Meester asks, “Want to sit in the back with me?” you immediately dismiss motion-sickness worries and clamber up into the black SUV. Meester’s easy, friendly demeanour makes you feel like you’re hanging out like you always do, although you only just met for a ride-along interview en route to the airport.

This Toronto trip is a quick stop in a go-go-go schedule for the actress, part of a media tour she and her friend, hairstylist Charles Baker Strahan, are doing together for Herbal Essences, for which she is the spokesperson.

“I used to use it before, but Charles re-introduced the brand to me, and I fell in love with it,” she says.

Also part of her busy life is her fourth season of Gossip Girl, where she plays manipulative society-princess Blair Waldorf, and three movies she wrapped in recent months.

In Country Strong, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw and scheduled for widespread release in January, Meester, 24, plays a young, Texas beauty-queen singer alongside Paltrow’s self-destructive country music star.

Despite having music in common — the actress fits singing and songwriting into her schedule as much as she can — Meester highlights this role as one of the most different from herself.

“She’s secretive about a lot of her past, about her insecurities and shortcomings, and is very much a little girl in a woman’s body,” she says.

“She looks up to Gwyneth’s character so much, and is totally heartbroken when she’s not what she expected her to be.”

In February’s The Roommate, Meester is a Single White Female-ish roommate to Minka Kelly.

“That’s about as far away from myself as you can get, and the most uncomfortable role I’ve ever played,” she says. “Every day I had to do something completely the opposite of a choice I would make in real life.”

Most of Meester’s characters are a bit bent in some way, whether spoiled and scheming, uncomfortably needy or outright psychotic. The secret to playing them is not to judge, she says.

“You have to embrace and love them, and reach some part of them in yourself, whether it’s completely blurry, vague and distant, or something you can relate to.”

Teamed with Hugh Laurie, Katherine Keener, Alyson Janney and Oliver Platt in The Oranges, also due in 2011, Meester finds herself in another questionable-choices character.

“I’m the daughter in one family who falls in love with the father (Laurie) in the other family.”

The actress says she doesn’t have a list of I-Want roles.

“I’ve been really lucky that the characters I want to play are also in scripts that are wonderful and beautifully executed, and I have time to do it.”

Spotted: A black Donald Trump on the Upper East Side!

Spin City vet Michael Boatman is joining the cast of Gossip Girl as Russell Thorpe, a powerful business tycoon and a former associate of Chuck’s father, Bart. Additionally, One Life To Live’s Tika Sumpter is also coming on board as his smart and savvy daughter, Ivanka Raina.

Both characters will recur beginning in early ‘11.

I suspect father and daughter will take the pot stirrer reins from Katie Cassidy’s Serena-hating minx. Personally, I hope GG boss Stephanie Savage finds a way to keep Cassidy around full time. Her Juliet is everything I hoped she would be and much, much more.
